Book Description
Mathematics is all around us. Often we do not realize it, though. Mathematics Everywhere is a collection of presentations on the role of mathematics in everyday life, through science, technology, and culture. The common theme is the unique position of mathematics as the art of pure thought and at the same time as a universally applicable science. The authors are renowned mathematicians; their presentations cover a wide range of topics. From compact discs to the stock exchange, from computer tomography to traffic routing, from electronic money to climate change, they make the ``math inside'' understandable and enjoyable. An additional attractive feature is the leisurely treatment of some hot topics that have gained prominence in recent years, such as Fermat's Theorem, Kepler's packing problem, and the solution of the Poincare Conjecture. Or maybe you have heard about the Nash equilibrium (of ``A Beautiful Mind'' fame), or the strange future of quantum computers, and want to know what it is all about? Well, open the book and take an up-to-date trip into the fascinating world of the mathematics all around us.

Book Description
Most of my students ask me at some point, and this where will it serve me? Especially when we see more abstract mathematical ideas for them, such as the calculation of roots of a polynomial. Someone even made a joke by saying "no way I go to the store and tell the lady to sell me of rice". It must be said that, in large part, this lack of connection of mathematics with the reality of the common person (this does not happen with those who study the career of mathematics) is due to some extent to a bad design in the plans and programs of study from the basic level, to the upper level, where preference is given to the teaching of algorithms instead of showing the beauty of mathematics that occurs through thought. So, the main objective of this text, is to bring the ordinary person to the math and show that, in fact, is presented everywhere (literally), that wherever you go or whatever you do, all is related to mathematics. It would not be bad for the reader to do the exercise of imagining what his life would be like without mathematics, because, for example, this would affect the transportation system, the communications system, the Internet would not exist without mathematics. Throughout the book we will see a variety of examples in everyday life where mathematics is used. I do not have the biggest doubt that the reader will be surprised at the many uses of mathematics that he learns in school. Obviously, a book is not enough to show how mathematics is everywhere, in everything we do, even in the way we think, but it is a little introduction and maybe, in the future, we can write a second part with more examples, as beautiful as the ones I show here.

Book Description
These proceedings report on the conference "Math Everywhere", celebrating the 60th birthday of the mathematician Vincenzo Capasso. The conference promoted ideas Capasso has pursued and shared the open atmosphere he is known for. Topic sections include: Deterministic and Stochastic Systems. Mathematical Problems in Biology, Medicine and Ecology. Mathematical Problems in Industry and Economics. The broad spectrum of contributions to this volume demonstrates the truth of its title: Math is Everywhere, indeed.

Book Description
This is a personal notebook from a conceptual travel. But, in a different sense, it also represents a report on travelling. The main part of the manuscript was written in Brazil, Denmark and England, whilst notes have also been inspired by visits to other countries. So, the book not only represents conceptual travel, it also reflects seasons of real travelling.

Book Description
On the General Science of Mathematics is the third of four surviving works out of ten by Iamblichus (c. 245 CE–early 320s) on the Pythagoreans. He thought the Pythagoreans had treated mathematics as essential for drawing the human soul upwards to higher realms described by Plato, and downwards to understand the physical cosmos, the products of arts and crafts and the order required for an ethical life. His Pythagorean treatises use edited quotation to re-tell the history of philosophy, presenting Plato and Aristotle as passing on the ideas invented by Pythagoras and his early followers. Although his quotations tend to come instead from Plato and later Pythagoreanising Platonists, this re-interpretation had a huge impact on the Neoplatonist commentators in Athens. Iamblichus' cleverness, if not to the same extent his re-interpretation, was appreciated by the commentators in Alexandria.
